  • International Dark Sky Week (IDSW) is an annual event held each April during the week of the new moon to celebrate the wonder and importance of the night and raise awareness about the harmful effects of light pollution. Started in 2003 by a high school student in Virginia, United States, it has since grown into a global phenomenon, with activities and events taking place around the world.

  • International Dark Sky Week (IDSW) began in 2003, when high-school student Jennifer Barlow from Midlothian, Virginia, United States, launched the first event (then called National Dark Sky Week) to get people to reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting and reconnect with the night sky.

  • DarkSky International is a global nonprofit working to protect the nighttime environment and dark skies from light pollution through education, advocacy, and responsible outdoor lighting. While DarkSky does not own International Dark Sky Week, it plays a key role as a primary organizer and promoter by providing resources and helping coordinate global participation each year.

  • International Dark Sky Week is observed in April, coinciding with the new moon, when the night sky is at its darkest and stargazing conditions are optimal. April offers milder weather and clearer skies in many parts of the world, making it an ideal time for people globally to get outside, experience darkness, and observe the stars.

  • You can participate in International Dark Sky Week by exploring the activity ideas and resources on this website. You’ll find suggestions for experiencing the night where you are, along with ways to take action to reduce light pollution in your home and community.
