Take Action

Here are some fun and impactful ways to participate in International Dark Sky Week! From swapping out the lights in your backyard to hosting a community event that raises awareness about smart and sustainable lighting, your actions can create meaningful change.

Do your lights protect the night?

DarkSky's Home Lighting Assessment program (coming soon) is a perfect way to start ensuring the outdoor lights around your home are dark-sky-friendly. This self-certification program helps you identify and inventory your lights while offering suggestions and solutions to replace them with fixtures that follow DarkSky's Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting. Upon completing the program, you'll receive a certification certificate to celebrate your home's commitment to preserving the nighttime environment.

Take stargazing to the next level!

The Globe at Night program is an international citizen-science campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of light pollution by inviting citizen-scientists to measure their night sky brightness and submit their observations from a computer or smartphone. Visit Globe at Night to learn more about how you can be part of this worldwide effort to track light pollution.

Celebrate the night with friends, family, and your community!

The best way to celebrate International Dark Sky Week is by sharing the experience with others! Plan a simple night hike with friends, or enjoy cocktails on the back porch with the lights off to immerse yourself in the nighttime environment. Want to take it up a notch? Host a star party in your neighborhood, local park, or nearby preserve. Whatever you decide, be sure to let us know! Fill out our International Dark Sky Wee Event Form (coming soon), and we’ll add your event to our community calendar.

Let's celebrate and protect the night together!

Don’t forget to snap some photos while participating in these activities! We’d love to see, celebrate, and share your efforts to protect the night. Tag us on social media using the hashtags #DarkSkyWeek and #DarkSky.
