Ashley Pipkin works for the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division of the National Park Service (NPS). She works closely with parks throughout the Pacific West Region of the NPS to protect and better understand the night sky resource and share its incredible value with the public. Her work takes her to some of the most amazing night skies in the country to collect information on how these nocturnal landscapes are changing. Most recently she has been contributing time to the development of the Basin and Range Dark Sky Cooperative.
IDSW Presentation Description: Ashley will discuss why the NPS values the night sky in parks and how they are striving to protect this precious resource. She takes you through the process evaluating how parks assess night sky conditions and how they are working to reduce impacts within and around their boundaries. The NPS continues to strive to be a good neighbor by working with communities, nearby stakeholders and other land agencies to promote the night sky we all share. She will discuss some recent efforts building a cooperative in the Basin and Range one of the last areas in the lower 48 with pristine views of the night sky.
